Wailua Beach

There's a great river that poors out into the ocean at this beach. The river actually has more activities, including kayaking and waterskiing.

There are some good surf spots around here too, but not for learning.

I like to stop off at Wailua and eat my plate lunch from Blossoming Lotus. Sometimes the surf at the rivermouth is incredible and the area is generally uncrowded. Most of the time the trade winds make for choppy seas and the Wailua River (with water from Waialeale) makes the water murky. "If da water stay Murcury - no go out!!!"

I have a question that I would like addressed to prove a point. Last week, while vacationing at the Islander on the Beach, my drunk husband wished to go night swimming off the beach right in front of the hotel. I told him that was not a good idea and literally fought him to stay on dry land. Could you please post an honest & detailed commentary of what a drunk grown man (even a good swimmer) could expect if he chose to swim off of the beach directly off the shore of this hotel at night? Thank you!

@ Anonymous: Anyone considering this should call the paramedics first to be sure they'll be available for the rescue. Then just don't do it. Period. It may be the last foolish thing you ever do.

@ Respondent & the World: Night diving in this area is common. BTW sharks know about you the second you step in the water. If you dont have a bloody nose or on your period, no worry bra/sista, lobsterzzzzzz. My favorite beach.

I just read the last comment about sharks and period situation which worried me. Not to be too graphic but I will be on Kauai this week and also will be on my period. Does it seriously pose a threat or was that just a joke?

I just returned from my 2nd visit to Kauai. My wife and I were just playing in the waves at this beach being careful not to get too far out because the waves were pretty violent and frequent. But in what seemed like a split second we both got caught in a rip tide. We tried not to panic and just swim parallel until we could get back in - but neither of us were strong enough to get back. After several minutes of trying my wife finally broke through and made it back in. I, on the other hand, was getting swept further out and began to take in a lot of water as I couldn't stay above water. I was completely exhausted when I finally went under for what I thought was for good. There wasn't really anyone else on the beach, but somehow a local surfer saw me and got there just in the nick of time to save me. By far this was the most traumatic incident of our lives. There is a lifegaurd tower, but it was unoccupied on a Monday morning. The water is beautiful, but if there is any advice I can give - stay away from this beach if you don't know what you are getting into! I'm 28 yrs old and fairly athletic - but this water was way too strong for me. I tried to thank the surfer, I would have given him anything - but he was gone before I could regain much consciousness. I just laid on the beach with my wife throwing up for about a half hour before going home. I have a newfound respect for the power of the ocean - but I still love Kauai!

My husband and I will be going to Kauai in May of 08\' and are planning our activities now. My husband is a die hard fly-fisherman, can he just cast from the beach or do we need permits? Can you recommend any good fishing spots? Thanks for any information.

I've been to Maui a few years ago. We never thought about or even considered rip currents the whole time we went snorkeling. Now I read all about rip currents and how to spot them in Kauai. Are the conditions that much different in Kauai and Maui?

We are going to Kauai May 23 - June 1 2008. What will the conditions be at that time? We want to go snorkeling, but I must admit I'm a little worried after reading too much information about strong rip currents on the beaches in Kauai. Do you have any words of encouragement?

rip currents?!!!! Dave posted about how he has learned to spot them back on 3-26-08!
Could somebody advise me about how to do this?
Did he view this on this web site or somewhere else? I have been body surfing for a long, long time- off the Jersey Shore true- but I have never known how you can spot a rip current until you get swept up in one.
