Anini Beach
A.K.A. Wanini • Photo by Brad Dawber
A tranquil stretch of beach protected by Hawaii's largest coral reef. Windsurfers enjoy these lake like waters and common winds. This beach used to be called Wanini. The , "W," fell off the name sign, rather than fixing the sign the name has permanently changed. Public parking, bathrooms and showers.

Cool Because
The reef is huge and offers protection even in large surf.
Hazards
Strong currents. Dangerous waves breaking on outer reefs. Sharp coral and slippery rocks.
Topography
Mostly sandy shoreline with rock shelves and points. Mostly reef underwater with sand channels.
Not Good For
The narrow beach and shallow water are great for the little kids, but make it hard for really active beach goers.

Beautiful beach (there is no area in Kauai that is not beautiful!) but even more so, the houses in the area are a treat to see!

Anini is great if you are looking for ease of access, facilities and calm water. There is plenty parking and grassy areas to picnic, play games or take a nap. The snorkeling is not great, but the large fringing reef protects the shorline when other north shore areas are slammed by big waves. I like Anini.

Anini Beach was mainly named Wanini but during Hurricane Iniki, in September 11, 1992, the W on the sign got cut off and so now, people have been calling it Anini ever since now. Just to let you tourists know

Thank you for the info Marie. We do mention the "W" falling off in the beach description. However, this did not happen in 1992 during Hurricane Iniki. It was way before that.

YES...You are right. We used to camp there in the 70's and it was already called "Anini". My dad still called it Wanini though...

I will tell you my Anini secret. On those occasions when we arrive on the island before our accomodations are ready, we drive to Anini to pass the time. First find bread, wine, and cheese at the Kilauea Farmer's Market next to Kong Lung Center on the road to Kilauea. Then proceed to Anini. Drive past the beach park, around the big curve to the left and watch for a parking turn out on the left. Park there and find a comfortable place among the rocks under great shade. You can hang your mainland clothes on the tree and slip into the island way.

I remember camping here several times in the 70's and it was Anini then. Whatever it is called - it is beautiful!

The fish tacos at the stand at the beginning of the parking area are phenomenal. I would go well out of my way to get one there.
May 29, 2007 1:36PM
I went diving at Anini the other day. The person above who said the diving is no good must have gone to the wrong place...it was beautiful like the underwater gardens of Venus...loaded with fish of every imaginable color and stripe

SO glad to see KJs post on the Fish Taco Stand...I'm coming back in a couple weeks & am SO glad to hear that it's STILL there...BEST fish tacos I've had ANYwhere & I too will surely travel out of my way for this one!

What other beaches besides Anini are good for windsurfing?
Jun 20, 2007 10:20PM
Geoff - Kauai is not as consistent as Maui in terms of wind (I used to be an avid windsurfer). It can be good but one has to really know the weather and the reefs are unforgiving - nothing like the Kanaha wind machine on Maui.

Are there any fishing restrictions at anini?
Jul 16, 2007 8:46AM
My wife and I have spent many days at Anini. It is one of our faves on Kauai but we have a bias toward the north shore. It is awesome. I believe it has been Anini since WW2 or shortly thereafter.

I remember Anini beach as having calm waters-it's where I learned to snorkel in 1993. I'm planning to go back in 2008. Does anyone know if it is still as calm and beautiful as I remember it. Also, I plan to rent a home for my vacation on Anini beach. Are they as beautiful and easy access on the beach as they look on the internet? Thanks.

Aug 05, 2007 8:12PM
Anini has a large reef that extends between 100M and 400M offshore - therefore providing protection to nearshore waters on most days (not always). Anini does have some OK snorkeling and lots of vacation rentals on or near the beach.
Aug 06, 2007 6:55AM
We visited Anini in mid July this year and it was awesome! I had also read that snorkeling was not good but we saw many beautiful fish there and we didn't explore very far from the park. I think staying in a beachfront house there would be one of the best vacations a person could have.

Aninni is a county park and there may be info on the kauai.gov website.
Sep 02, 2007 3:47PM
I camped at Anini for two weeks in June 07, except on Tuesday's when it is closed. Anini is, in my opinion, the best out of all the county camping beaches. The water was always as smooth as glass due to the offshore reef. Snorkeling was not great, at least when I was there. Much better at Tunnels. There is a large grass area to pitch your tent, even ocean front sites close to the water. It can be crowded as there were 50 vehicles and probably three times as many people during the second week.

Hello. Could you please tell me a bit about "Queens Bath" in Princeville and under what circumstances or time of year is it safe to go see? I have heard a lot about it from friends who have enjoyed visiting it, but have also heard warnings on certain web sites. Thanks.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Sep 05, 2007 8:49PM
"Queens Bath" is a large natural pool on a rocky shoreline area off Princeville. The conditions vary greatly at this location and a number of un-aware swimmers have been hurt and killed at Queens Bath. Since we do not monitor or report on this location I will defer comment or advice on what is "safe." Experienced Hawaiian water men / women know always to assess conditions before going in (or near) the ocean.
Sep 11, 2007 6:50AM
My Wife and I were on Kauai from Aug 18-Sept 1 on our honeymoon. We are form Calgary Canada, so we don\'t get to go in the ocean very often. I went Snorkeling at Aninni. I found the snorkeling very good, and the water was very warm..... Kauai has grabbed our hearts and the plan is to move to Hawaii in the next year.....
Sep 29, 2007 9:43AM
We were snorkeling this beach during the Week of September 14th - 21st 2007. It was beautiful and a truly wonderful location to snorkel. The water was as warm as a bathtub. Kauai is the best island of all if you like nature and don't want to be in the crowds of the other islands. Debra Rivera, Justin Harmon and Sheri Harmon

Wonderful site - thank you!
My wife, two year old son, and I are planning a trip to Kauai in January. We love the North Shore, but are nervous about bringing our young son to the beach during heavy surf season. Seems like Anini might be the best bet - does that seem right? Any advice much appreciated!

Anini can be a good spot but be careful anywhere during times of high surf. Just because it is high surf season does not mean that the surf is giant every day. Have fun.

I am planning on vacationing at Anini (Wanini)Beach in 2008 or 2009. Is there a time of year best for fishing?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Oct 29, 2007 8:38AM
Hey Brent - in my experience April through July are the best months for fishing. Generally calmer seas and the Papio are biting. Fishing in Hawaii can be tough - the bite is either on or off. If you don't get a strike or follow after trying a few good looking areas, then you should probably wait for a different tide or moon phase. Also keep moving and watch out for dangerous surf. W

I appreciate the discussion here. My wife and I are looking for a place to camp in Kauai on Christams Eve. Are there any things to consider regarding the holiday? should we avoid the North Shore due to potential winter rain? In summary...what would be suggestions for the one overnight. Qualities we are looking for are beauty, solitude, likely good weather. We are adventurous and fit. Thanks to all suggestions.
Niels (former Maui resident 1991-1992).
Any beach volleyball on the island?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Dec 11, 2007 7:35PM
Aloha Niels - early Dec. has been extremely quiet but expect more people around the Holiday break. We had big rains and wind last week; the weather is epic now. As a former Maui resident you know that Winter is time for a mix of frontal passages and nice weather. Spring and Summer offer a more stable Trade wind pattern with associated windward showers.
For camping the Y-camp is very quiet but booked on at peak periods (Christmas and all Summer). Sloggett in Kokee is amazing if you like the mountains. Vollyball in Hanalei and Kalapaki.

I have been to Hawaii on a cruise. Thinking about going to Kauai only this time. Found a budget hotel "Kauai Sands Hotel" right on the Waipouli beach, and learned you CAN'T go swimming there. How far are the calm, snorkeling type of beaches from that area (by car)? We really like the hotel+flight price there. If we were to choose a hotel on the north shore, how far from the airport is that?
Thank you guys!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 10, 2008 7:41AM
Hi Mercedes - the area in front of Kauai Sands has a number of reef channels and strong currents. In general, East-facing beaches have choppy, onshore winds and are not that great for snorkeling (dependes on what time of year). Lydgate is about 2 miles from that hotel but you will experience much better snorkeling if you go North (calmer in summer) or South (calmer in winter). Both are about 1 hour drive from Kauai Sands. Check our daily ocean report and we'll let you know where it's calmest on that day. W
Jan 10, 2008 2:08PM
I've been to Anini many time for the day while renting a condo at nearby Princeville. Met a family from Canada spending the Christmas Holidays on the beach and was totally envious.
Will be coming to Kauai in Feb.'08 during Presidents week and want to spend the first few night camping at Anini.
Is it required to have camping permits in advance or just advisable? Will it fill up during Presidents week?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 10, 2008 8:29PM
Hi Steve - you do need permits for Anini (issued by the County).
Jan 13, 2008 9:54AM
This saturday I will arrive on the North Shore of Kauai for a 10-day respite. I really want to be able to snorkel, but am not the strongest swimmer and am a little apprehensive of large waves and strong currents. I have read that Anini is often sheltered from the high surf, but will this area be completely overrun with people if we want to camp and snorkel for a few days?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 13, 2008 11:59AM
Annie H - Anini has a large protecting reef but when the surf is massive (like today) all of that water washing in has to go out somewhere. Anini is generally calm, but there are a few spots that have proven to be fatal. Can't tell you if it will be crowded or not. W

My husband and I are planning an anniversary back to Kauai after 20 years. I\'m thinking of the north shore, Anini Beach, private lodging. Our anniversary is in October, but wondering if there is a better time of year to come back to the honeymoon isle. Is there any shelling or treasure hunting? Thanks

Wonderful site!!
I'm on Oahu but a friend is coming for vacation during the Presidents Day holiday. Looking to do some camping. We have some options for Oahu, but was wondering if the Monday holiday thru a few days after might be less crowded than before or during. Not looking any heavy duty ocean activities...just a quiet spot or two to kick back. Any recommendations?

Jan 21, 2008 7:48PM
Aloha Caron. Glad you're enjoying the site. As for camping, it's hard to say whether Kauai's camping areas will be crowded for the holiday or not. For less popular campgrounds you may want to check out the North Shore's Anahola Beach Park, or the West Side's Salt Pond Park. Anini Beach on the North Shore is another oceanfront camp spot that is beautiful but it varies - sometimes busy, sometimes pretty empty.
Remember to get permits. Enjoy your stay on Kauai!

I plan to get married in Kauai 11/1/08. We are still trying to choose between Hanalei and Anini. Also, we are not sure what time of day would be best and if there is major traffic that time of year. Any suggestions?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 27, 2008 5:00PM
Hi Kathryn - both Hanalei and Anini are nice spots although most would agree that Hanalei takes first place. November is a relatively quiet time of year and afternoons have the best lighting. I suggest you do some scouting or hire a wedding coordinator to find a spot that does not have much traffic. If you are speaking in terms of road traffic, Kauai has some problems in that department. Hi I am looking for info regarding windsurfing in Kuaia
Is there good wind for advanced windsurfers in March? Flat Water? lessons - pro gear? Anywhere to stay and windsurf at same place?
Thanks so much!

Feb 04, 2008 6:34PM
Hi Nichola - the wind on Kauai is NOT as strong / consistent as Maui but there is good windsurfing to be found on the North and South shores. Wave sailing and tricky conditions. Bring your own gear because there are no shops. If you want to stay near the sailing zone try to find a vacation rental in Haena. W

Hello - I put together a last minute trip and would like to camp Anini...problem is I would be arriving on Sun 2/24/2008 and do not have time to get the permit in the mail. I have read that you can pay the Ranger if they show up...is there a way you can pay at Anini?
Thanks!

Feb 18, 2008 10:11PM
Aloha Matt. I've never tried to camp at Anini without a permit. It's my understanding that the ranger goes through the campground very early in the morning and rouses anyone that does not have the permit hanging on the outside of their tent. Keep in mind, when there is no permit present, the ranger will be perceiving you as an "illegal camper". This attitude at first light, I've heard, is not a very pleasant way to start the day. However, I've heard, at this point, you can pay the permit fee and continue to stay. Your best bet is to contact the County to get the official word. Their number is: (808) 241-4463, open 8:15 - 4pm HST Mon - Fri. Have a great trip. J

I am staying in a home that I rented right here on Anini Beach. I am at the end of the road. Beautiful but crowded. Lots of cars drive down here just to turn around. Lots of loud music and loud cars 24 hours a day. We have been woken up by loud music at 2:00 am. The cars drive fast on the road and the locals dont seem very friendly. Beautiful, good swimming but would not return to spend $1K per day.
Feb 21, 2008 7:49PM
Hello - my soon-to-be husband and I will be spending two weeks on Kauai for our honeymoon at the beginning of June. We will be staying for part of the trip on Anini beach. We would like to fish our dinner at least some of the evenings. Is Anini a good place to fish? What are other good places to fish? Also, can you recommend good Northshore spots other than Anini for swimming? Thank you.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 21, 2008 9:09PM
Aloha Anne. Most beaches on the North shore are calm with fairly small surf in the summer months. Of course, conditions vary so check the Ocean Report and ask the lifeguards. Hanalei Bay is protected and often small this time of year. As for fishing, much of the edible fish are best found in deeper depths, requiring a boat. It's my understanding that often chartered fishing tours keep the fish you catch, though. Anyone else out there have fishing recommendations? Have a great honeymoon! J
Mar 05, 2008 2:58AM
I am coming to the area in just over a week, and want to do some fishing from shore or from a kayak. Where can I learn more about bait and fish to catch/eat? Can't wait!
Jeff
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 05, 2008 8:26PM
Aloha Jeff. You'd have to tune in with some local fishermen to get the scoop on fishing spots from shore. You could possible check in with one of the variety stores on island that sell bait and speak to the store owner, too.
Most visitors experience fishing on chartered boats that go further out at sea. You'd need to speak with them about the protocol for getting to eat what you catch. Do a search online to find some boat companies.
Enjoy your stay. The weather has been amazing this week! J
Mar 08, 2008 9:44PM
I will be in Kaua'i in mid April and am wondering what the weather is typically like that time of year. Also, does this tend to be a busy tourist season?
Mar 09, 2008 6:21AM
With regard to camping at Anini without a permit, you can get away with it the first time (the only excuse the ranger will take is that you arrived on the island too late to obtain permit). He will issue you a permit for five dollars. The next time (if he remembers you, and he just may remember your name) he will not be so accomodating and may fine you $100.00. I camped there on two occasions for about two weeks each. The ranger (his name is Tony) is pretty strict no nonsense type of guy. He does come around in the morning as early as 4:30 am to check permits. He did not seem to work weekends though. Furthermore, he does not allow you to sleep in your car even if you have a permit for the nite. I should know, one nite last December i arrived at night and could not get my tent set up, and was awakened at 5:00 am and was told that if I wanted to sleep in my car, I had to drive all the way up to Haena. The county also has a 60 day limit per year for each camper. There were some people(families) that had moved to Kauai and were using Anini has a \'temporary\' home.

Aloha Mindi. It's tough to say what the typical weather will be, as it changes often. We're currently experiencing weather that feels like summer is coming early, but by April we could be getting a lot of rain. One never knows. Throughout the day, you can experience rain and sun, especially on the North shore. Generally speaking, you'll find more sunny conditions on the South and West side, year round.
As for "busy" it seems Kauai has less and less of a "tourist season" as more time shares mean visitors year-round. There's an obvious influx around Spring break and then when the summer months begin. Of course on this small island, "busy" is relative (though the island sees 1.2 million visitors a year). Enjoy your stay! J

Queens Bath- next to Polihale, probably the next best \"beach\" on Kauai. Definitely not for the faint at heart! The winding trail is only the tip of the iceberg with this adventure. First time there I found the place right at high tide! Took turns with another tourist playing lifeguard- use the buddy system here it may save your life or someone else. Great snorkeling, surprisingly. Lots of different types of fish here. Entry and exiting are very challenging during high tide and during the winter months. Waves break and drive you back towards a rocky channel that loops around and goes back out to sea. Not a family activity or for average swimmers! Seen many people struggle here..
Kauai Explorer Staff
Mar 13, 2008 7:24PM
Hi Chris. You're probably referring to "Queen's Pond" a location in the Polihale beach area. ("Queen's Bath" is a spot in Princeville, often mentioned in guidebooks, but very dangerous - nearby hotels will not even give directions to this area).
Polihale can be an extremely dangerous swimming spot that has taken lives. You're right in saying that it's not a family water spot. J
Mar 16, 2008 2:13PM
I actually was referring to Queens Bath in the princeville area. I guess I should have been more specific...Neither place is all that safe though....

I wanted to respond to Sahrah who wants to open a B&B at Anini
I love camping at Anini because less is more. You're at one of the most beautiful setting you could ask for with no TV, internet or crowds by the pool
I found all my neighbors to be relaxed and friendly. Checking into a hotel after 4 nights camping on Anini was a big let down.
Because they close the camping on Tuesday's, it would be great to be in a near by B&B for a night or two. I would require a great matress, an evening cocktail and Kona coffee for breakfast. Others might want some beach stuff like a chair, matt or mask and snorkle.
Apr 07, 2008 10:34AM
I've recently heard some not so good things regarding the Anini Stream in regards to its pollution. Do you have any information on the toxins in and around the stream/ river mouth? It would make sense, as that area of the reef at Anini is pretty dead compared to spots like Tunnels and Ke'e.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 07, 2008 9:08PM
Aloha Andrew. I'd advised speaking to the experts about this. Hanalei Watershed Hui has been working on water sample data and posting reports on specific locations, Anini included. Aloha Kauai Explorers. We (mother and son) are traveling your way soon, hoping to cycle and walk and trip upon that taco truck, inviting waters, and long days. Is there a place to rent a motorcycle with a sidecar? Is there a way to travel on land without taking the main road around the island?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 09, 2008 6:39PM
Aloha Maxali. The main road is the only way to get around the entire island, and even that road ends at the Na Pali Coast. The Kauai Path, a wide 'sidewalk' for bikes and pedestrians, spans Kealia to Lydgate and offers a way to travel off the beaten path (no cars/motorcycles). More info on this Bike Path in our Trails section. Search online for kauai motorcycle rentals and you can find out if any offer the sidecar option. Have a great trip! J

Does anyone have information about handicap accessibility at beaches on Kauai? I have heard that Poipu and Lydgate have beach wheelchairs to use on a first-come, first-served basis, and am wondering on the likelihood of getting one. Also, Is is feasible to have a person in a wheelchair on the grass near the beach at Anini? My daughter wants to take a windsurfing lesson, and grandma (in the wheelchair) would like to watch. Thanks for the help!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 17, 2008 3:58PM
Aloha. Your best resource for information about handicap accessibility can be found on the visitor bureau's website here:
http://www.kauai-hawaii.com/visitor-faq/index.php?view-note&66
As for Anini beach, if the wheelchair can go on grass, then you'd be ok, as there is a big lawn area near where they give the windsurf lessons. Hope this helps. J
Apr 27, 2008 3:16AM
Hey Kaisia,
from my time at Anini, I would say it's a good place where someone in a wheelchair can park underneath the mango trees with close to the beach where you could watch someone during a windsurf lesson.
May 02, 2008 2:57PM
We will be there in December and we are looking at the possibility of snorkeling here if the waves are too rough at Ke'e or Tunnels. Does any one know the best area to snorkel at at Anini? From what I remember this is quite a wide beach... what side is best? by the park or away from it, by the tree swing? etc.. does it even matter? I've read on one of the other posts about 100-400meters out..I'm just not sure where to go and any comments would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

As much as I love Anini, I too have wondered what happened to all the coral there. I'd say 90% of it appears to be dead which is probably why there aren't many fish there.
One local told me they felt it's due to the nearby Princeville golf course and the runoff from all ther fertilizer they use or used to use. They said the coral was fine before the golf course arrived.

Aloha Ida. The weather on Kauai is constantly changing and sun showers or clouds can occur year round - so there is no way to know for sure. Generally September is still pretty warm and conditions at the beach are mild. Anini is a tranquil location that will still have daylight, as I'm sure your wedding planner knows. Enjoy your special day. J

Aloha Leslie. You'll see grassy areas with spots to park all along the road at Anini between the boat ramp and camping area. Any spot is along this area is good for enjoying and playing with the snorkel. Enjoy. J

Hi! I'm coming to Kauai for a week and am having trouble squeezing in everything I want to do. I have the opportunity to dive or snorkel Anini one day. The only other diving I'm hoping to do is Tunnels Reef one day. Is Anini worth the effort of renting gear for a day, or would I be better off somewhere else or just snorkeling there?
Thanks!
Jane

May 21, 2008 7:14PM
Aloha Jane. There's decent snorkeling at Ånini but Tunnels is more renowned for what its reef offers. However, ocean conditions at Tunnels can be very dangerous, so check the ocean report and tune in with the lifeguards before going out. For more advice on diving locations, you may want to consider contacting a local dive company that offers tours. Enjoy! J

Great site with helpful information. We stayed in a cottage at Anini Beach in Feb 08 and had a wonderful time! Kauai is wonderfully peaceful and serene. I am already planning our next trip!

My wife and three young boys (10,7,5) are coming to Kauai in Mid October. Which are the best beaches in the Princeville area for us.
Any lesser known spots?
We understand and respect your warnings of the unpredictability of the ocean.
Also, how long would it take to drive from the north to the south end?
Thanks.

Jul 15, 2008 9:49PM
Hi Chuck. Anini Beach is a good family beach, though fall/winter has more surf on the North shore, so stay tuned with ocean conditions. Check with the lifeguards before swimming at Hanalei Bay, but this may be an option. A drive to the South side from the North shore (traffic depending) will probably take an hour and a half or so. J

Hi, this is a great site! 3 families (2 of them with kids) are planning a 1 week trip in late March 2009. Is there a good beach for vacation rental for 6 adults and 4 kids between 3 and 6 YO? We are considering Hanalei and Anini so far. Would one be better than the other? Are there others we should consider?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Neal. Anini has rentals that can accommodate large groups and a nearby family-friendly beach. Hanalei Bay is a short drive away, but may be seeing larger surf this time of year. Anini is protected by a large reef and often is calm and shallow enough for all ages. No lifeguard at Anini so keep tuned with our Ocean Report while you're here. Enjoy! J
Jul 22, 2008 7:24AM
Thank you for you for your help! Another question. How is Anahola Beach? Is it wide and sandy? Good for kids?
Thanks again.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jul 22, 2008 7:29PM
Hi Neal. The far end (most Southern) of the beach park has a protected area that is generally family-friendly. Not a lot of sand, but a decent sized beach. The other end of Anahola beach has a river that runs through the middle, wider sand area and bigger waves (conditions vary). There have been drownings in this area so use caution. Anahola is now lifeguarded, so check in with them. J

Excellent info here. I've looked at the wave graphs, and it's kind of hard to tell what it will be like on the North shore in mid-to-late August. Looks like the swells just start to build around then, but it is still the calmest part of the island.
I have a 20 month old son who we want to take wading in very safe water. We will be staying near Princeville the week of Aug. 20th. Hoping Anini will be the ticket! Any recommendations?

Hi Dave. Anini is a very good bet for this time of year on the North shore with little ones. Of course confirm conditions with our Ocean Report when you're here, but you should be fine. You're right that the surf does slowly begin to pick up around this time of year, but it's generally still small, with the North shore having the smallest conditions on the island in the summer. Depending on the surf, Hanalei Bay may be a good choice as well. Enjoy! J

Hello,
We are a family of 5 (4 adults) and l teenager coming to a lovely beach front home just after Christmas and into the New Year of 2009. It is our first time to any of the Hawaiian Islands and we are so excited to have located accomodations this time of year. What type of New year celebrations occur on the island.
Also, we want to Hike the Waima canyon and kayak (probably on one of the rivers due to the time of year.
Our older children are extreemly athletic and experienced kayakers, but our teen and myself are not. Is there a route you might suggest.
Mahalo!

Anini vs. Hanalei Bay (my 2 cents)
If you have little ones then hands down I\'d go with staying at Anini.
Hanalei puts you closer to resturants, shops and night life which is less important when you\'re traveling with kids.
Plus the beach at Anini can\'t be beat for letting the little ones off the leash - yes you need to always consider condition.
I camped last February at Anini with the kids for 3 nights and did 4 nights at a hotel. Next February we\'ll camp the entire week at Anini - weather pending. While camping at Anini, we discovered that less really is more.

Hi Brenda - how stoked are you about your first trip to Hawaii??? On new years people usually light off fireworks and have beach fires. Top adventures include: hiking Hanakapiai, kayak Hanalei or Wailua, hike Waimea canyon, hike Kokee, learn to surf, exploring Mahaulepu. Read through this website - a lot of this info is already here W

We are planning on coming to Kauai December 25 thru Jan 2 and were considering camping at Anini. I\'ve camped in Kauai in the summer, but never in the winter and am a little concerned about the weather and also potential crowds/noise during the holidays. Do you have any recommendations/advice?
Kauai Explorer Staff
Oct 15, 2008 10:02PM
Hi Doug - the weather can be beautiful in December but you should also prepare for some heavy rain and wind. Things are pretty quiet here now but usually somebody is partying on New Year's - that will probably be short-lived. One of the upsides of economic downturns are less crowds for those that do come. W

We are looking for a good location for January 2009. We would like to get in the ocean but will it be to cold? If not can you suggest which side of the island should we be looking to rent a condo? There will be 3 of us all adults. Thanks

Oct 27, 2008 6:47PM
Hi Jen - the ocean will not be cold in January. Kauai is in a sub-tropical zone which means the temps are generally pleasant. Not ultra-humid and definitely not cold. There are condos for rent on the North, East and South shores but I am not going to recommend a particular one in the context of this forum. W

Hi Teresa - Anini is a large, open area for camping. Sometimes it can get crowded. You will need to get permits from the County office in Lihue. Anini is great for swimming as long as the surf is not giant. Consult locals and check our Ocean Report. W

Hello, good info here. Will be visiting Kauai for the first time the end of January. I was hoping to check out Anini beach for some fly-fishing, but I am wondering if it's even worth my while? I've heard there are some bonefish there? Do you have any fly-fishing guide recommendations? I'd also like to check out a deep sea charter for tuna, mahi or whatever, but have heard that I can't keep my fish to eat if desired. Any recommendations would be appreciated! Thanks.
Nov 18, 2008 7:47PM
This is one of the coolest beaches I've ever seen. I loved the calm waters and the corral blooms, this is where you can find the fish. We went at the end of May, and found the beach to ourself.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Nov 20, 2008 11:41PM
Hi Todd - the largest bonefish I have caught here was around 12# but I did not use a fly rod. We get lots of wind and the casting is tricky. Good spinning for Jack, Moi, Bonefish but you really have to hit the conditions right. Depending on the charter captain you might be able to keep fish - I think Capt. Don's is a reputable operation. I'll be camping for a week in February at Anini. Since they clear out the camping on Tuesdays, can you recommend a couple other campgrounds on the north side?

Hi Steve - there is excellent camping at YMCA camp Naue in Haena (as long as a group has not reserved the entire camp). You just show up (before dark) and sign in. There are bunkhouses, tent spaces and hot showers. The fee is $15 per night and it is generally very quiet. Right on the beach. W

We are coming in mid-February. We have kids 3-7 yo. Can we rent or buy snorkel equipment here? Or should we buy on the mainland before traveling? E

Visited Anini March 08 and loved the tranquil waters and the variety of clear ocean colors. We will be arriving Jan 16 and seeing that the surf forcast is 10-14ft wondering if the reef protects some of that or will this beach be totally different than what I remember it?

Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 08, 2009 4:07PM
Hi Stef - I was at Anini 2 days ago and it was really nice with lots of people enjoying the ocean and beach. The reef is so large there that it takes a LOT of swell to affect the nearshore areas. Keep in tune with our Ocean Reports. One potential danger you need to be aware of at Anini (and other spots) is the movement of the water. Waves break all along the outer reef, pushing water inward. All of this water equalizes via a few large channels. Even a strong swimmer cannot overpower the amount of current moving through these channels in the reef. Learn to recognize this at Anini and other locations. W
Jan 08, 2009 7:57PM
Hey Elliot,
We'll be there mid Feb. with our kids as well. If you have trouble finding decent snorkel masks for the kids in winter on the mianland, you can always stop at Wallmart near the Lihue airport where you can find a great selection at reasonable prices.
We camped at Anini last Feb. during Presidents week and saw no other kids there oddly enough. Lots of great people but no kids. We'll look for you!
Jan 08, 2009 8:01PM
is the fish taco truck still coming to anini each day?

Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 13, 2009 6:02PM
Hi Lynne - Kayak Kauai and Outfitters Kauai rent gear but it will not be as good as your own. W
Jan 14, 2009 4:30AM
Lynn,
Hauling camping gear to Kauai from the main land is easier than you might think. My family brings tents sleeping bags and a stove with all our other Kauai gear in 3 large duffel bags. We stop at Wallmart to pick up some propane an ice chest and some inexpensive chairs.
If you can't haul it, buying it at Wallmart in Lihue might be cheaper than if you had to rent it for a week - you'd be surprised.
Jan 21, 2009 9:21PM
Buying inexpensive stuff to save A few bucks and fill our landfills with even more crap, cheap chairs, snorkel gear, etc. Is not showing alot of ALOHA! Malama the AINA!
Jan 22, 2009 5:16PM
no more garbage;
I agree that buying "cheep" goods with the intent of sending them to landfill is not responsible. When I'm done using my "cheap" chairs at Anini I pass them on to someone else to appreciate.
The "cheap" styrofoam ice chest I discard goes into the recycle bin.
Everything else comes back to the mainland with me.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 22, 2009 8:54PM
Hi Camper - I agree that just throwing away cheap stuff is not good. I do not agree with you throwing away the styro cooler (those things should be outlawed). W
Jan 23, 2009 5:20PM
so we are in agreement?
like I said; the chairs get passed on to someone else who can use them and the styrofoam ice chest is recycled.
I'm of course assuming Kauai has a system set up for recycling? I do remember seeing a recycle can at Anini.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 23, 2009 7:13PM
Yes - I'm agreeing with you on the reuse, recycle aspect. Also was pointing out that the County does NOT recycle Styrofoam. Our recycling program is not up to standards. W
Jan 25, 2009 12:42AM
If Kauai does not recycle styrofoam, then I will find an alternative to a styrofoam ice chest. I'll probably just bring my own packed with camping gear.
I agree with you that styrofoam should be banned - especially considering there are no means there to recyle it.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Jan 25, 2009 6:08PM
I agree Anini - those styro coolers just break and quickly become trash. Too bad there is no gear exchange program on Kauai. I see people pack their coolers as luggage full of gear. You could prolly save money because food is so expensive here.

I was so happy to find a site like this, thanks much! We are hoping to visit Kauai in April and do some hiking, camping, beach exploring etc. I was just wondering how reasonable it is to rely on the bus system as our only mode of transport, backed up by walking, hitching (biking?). Also, is this a slower time and possibly easier to get permits for places like the Kalalau trail? Any reccomendations appreciated! Thanks!

Feb 15, 2009 4:19PM
Is it safe to leave a tent unattended with stuff in it during the day in campgrounds like the one at Anini? Just wondering because there is lots of chat about break-ins to the cars at trail heads but nothing about tents. I'm just curious how realistic it is to camp for most of our vacation or if it's easier to just base out of a hotel or hostel. Thanks again for any advice!
Kauai Explorer Staff
Feb 17, 2009 4:31PM
Jess - we do not recommend leaving any valuables in your tent. Basic camping gear (pads, sleeping gear etc.) will probably be safe, but if your stuff looks like you just went shopping at REI it might attract attention. This is a situation where a few people ruin the experience for the honest majority. W
Feb 20, 2009 1:19AM
I was just at Anini in late Jan/early Feb. As a suggestion, it may be helpful to add diagram maps of the prevailing currents per the most popular beaches for snorkelers to review prior to going snorkeling etc. I was just at Anini...gorgeous, and while appearing calm, the current even a few yards off the beach was very strong. The best suggestion I have heard, also as an experienced snorkeler, is to use a snorkeling vest, especially when you are new to a reef/beach.
Kauai Explorer Staff

Hi Mark - Anini is a great place to stay on the North Shore. At this time we don't have accommodations reviews but plan on including that info in the future. Would this be a good feature? Anini has good swimming, just be mindful on the channels in the reef and their associated currents. W

Feb 21, 2009 5:55PM
Hi Jess - the Kauai Bus works especially if you are willing to supplement it by walking and hitching. You don't need to travel the entire island so once you find an area you like just explore it locally. When my family first came in 1978 we stayed on Hanalei Bay for a month - with no car. It was great. For permits, I have heard mixed reports. Try to apply before you arrive. W
Mar 06, 2009 3:34AM
I will be spending time on my own while my husband works. I love to snorkel but won\'t have a buddy. Does Annini usually have a fair number of people there during mid June so that a middle age woman could snorkel (w/vest if needed) safely?
Any other suggestions for safe areas? I will be staying in Princeville area and will have a car.

Hi Julie - the only time I have NOT seen people at Anini is during a full-on storm. Check our daily Ocean Report for recommendations and warnings. Also it's a good idea to speak with lifeguards and locals. W
Mar 10, 2009 8:30PM
We will be heading back to Kauai and already thinking of possible beach spots. We check KE daily and head for the safest beaches based on the daily report since we have young kids.
We know Anini is always a safe bet but the area close to the campground is al lwe have experienced. What is the eastern end like for a family? Is there conditionally safe swimming and snorkeling on that end or is there a chennel with potential rip currents?
Thak you as always.
Mar 13, 2009 12:42AM
When Tunnels or Haena are too rough, Ainini is perfect for some snorkeling. Last week (and the wind was kicking up) I saw a ton of fish and more importantly - three green turtles! Watch the tide charts however. At low tide, it just may be too shallow to swim/snorkel in certain areas.

Mar 13, 2009 5:15PM
Hi again Will - the far Western end of Anini is beautiful and fun exploring but you must be very cautious of the large channel due to currents heading seaward. Anini is a large reef and where water washes over the reef it must equalize. There are a number of channels (openings) in the reef at Anini and the current can be quite strong in these (too powerful to swim against). Ask locals and learn to recognize hazards. You guys should also check out Haena. W

We\'re planning a visit for a week overlapping late August/early September and have a terrible time deciding where we should stay. I am thinking the north shore might be safest bet for swimming, and I like the proximity to various things (for the extended family\'s various interests), but can\'t find information about Sea Lodge Beach on your site. We found a beachfront house that looks great with access just near it. I have a 2-year old son that is my main concern. I want to be able to play safely without fear of suddenly developing conditions, for example. We\'ll probably build sand castles and explore, mostly, but I thought I would check to see if I should be okay to wade in with him also. We know about other beaches like Baby Beach, and definitely plan to explore the whole island, but what are your suggestions about this being our home base? We\'ll always watch for currents of course, but I have no idea how likely it will be to find safe conditions here. Advice is appreciated.
Kauai Explorer Staff
Apr 09, 2009 2:11AM
Hi Ajacks - Sea Lodge is not on the beach, it's on the bluff overlooking Anini and the pali (cliffs) below Princeville. The closest beach is Anini. Princeville is well-centered on the North Shore and there are plenty of safe North Shore beaches in August/September. You should explore Hanalei, Haena, Anini and others. Best to check our daily Ocean Report for hazards. W

I have heard that there may be some bonefish around Anini. That sounds fun. However, I would like to catch something I could grill. Can you imagine what an amazing experience that would be! Catching a fish from the Pacific and eating it that same day! Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Matt - that would be a great experience. I've done my share of fly fishing but found that it is not the best technique for here. A spinning rod with surface lures is more effective. We get our fair share of wind here which makes casting flys tough. Bonefish are around but they behave differently than those on the flats. My favorite is Papio - Jack family. Good luck! W

Thank you again for the great info. This website has been very helpful. The house we rented is across the street from the North West end of Anini beach. We plan on having our wedding on the beach and reception at the house. I keep hearing about camping on Anini, will we need to worry about campers toward this end of the beach? Wouldn\'t want to have a tent in the background of our wedding pictures :)

I will be staying in Princeville the week before Thanksgiving this year, and spending the following week on the Big Island. Is Anini decent in mid-late November? I've read the comments here and it seems every other time of the year is covered! Will the snorkeling be good, or should I just enjoy the beaches and do the snorkeling later in Kona?

Hi David - November will probably have some very nice calm days. Please just stay in tune with our daily Ocean Report.

You are welcome Courtney - there seems to be plenty of space for campers and weddings at Anini. Hope it goes well.

FlyRodder Matt:
If you bring your rod, let us know how it goes. I'm coming the end of the month. I know the water is much deeper than Christmas or the Keys, and the Kaua'i reef structure will probably carve a line to pieces, but I'm tempted like you are...! Here's one idea: kayak. Nine weights are easy to throw while seated.
I've heard Papio are good to eat, but that you don't want to eat Jacks. I have no idea if this is true or why, can a local clarify?

Hi Ben and Matt - I too would be interested how you guys do with fly rods. Papio are Jack family. We have the turquoise variety called ‘Omilu, one with long streamers called Kagami, white and black papio too. When they are over 20# we call stop calling them Papio and instead refer to them as Ulua. Ciguatera is a bacteria that accumulates in all larger reef fish and can be a deadly neurotoxin - that's why we are careful eating larger predators that feed on reef species. W

RE: several comments - Anini has good snorkeling if you know where to go. Drive past the park & polo field, keep going until you reach the dirt road. Look off to the right going about 50-100 yards. There is a deep boat channel going out between the reef. Follow it out and snorkel along the edge where it drops off deep.If you go right into the rocks, there are pools of fish hiding in less than 3 feet of water. WARNING: if you turn left out of the boat channel do NOT go too far or you might get caught in the current that whipos around to the beach beneath Sea-lodge. Many wind-surfers get caught here & can\'t get back in. WARNING: do NOT go out here and swim left when the tide is OUT going.
WIND-SURFING: Kaua\'i has a GREAT place in Haena & the winds are consistant. DIRECTIONS: Go North past Hanale\'i, past Hanale\'i Colony Resort on the right & the \"Last Chance\" shop on the left. (There\'s a very small culvert bridge between these 2 places.) Keep going less than 1 mile until you see the YMCA camp on the right. Turn right there. Go back just a bit, park & use the beach access path. - Tunnels Beach: Cops like to ticket those parking along the road. Best bet: drive a bit farther & park at Haena Beach (immediately after crossing the rocky stream bed) You\'ll see the camp ground and life-guard tower). Park, then walk right down along the beach to Tunnels. -
Enjoy :)

Just curious... i heard that Anini is a very long narrow beach, is there an area that is wider? Our wedding is going to be about 40 people on the beach, just trying to find the best location. We've tried to have some people scout it out, but nothing definite yet. Possibly the furthest west end...? any opinion would be greatly apprecitated

Hi Courtney - Anini is narrow esp at high tide. You could try way down by the end of the road. I strongly suggest getting a local wedding coordinator so you can find the best spot on your day.

Aloha!
Thank you kauaiexplorer.com for running this excellent site and service!
My husband and I would like to camp at Anini Beach for two nights from Sunday to Tuesday in two weeks time, too short to apply for a permit by mail in advance. The permit office is open only from Monday to Friday. Thus my questions:
1.) How can we "legally" camp at Anini arriving in Kauai on Saturday when the permit office is closed. Is it possible to convince the ranger that we could not get a permit and pay 5 Dollars to him as I read in a previous post?
2.) Besides the permit, do we need to make any other reservation at Anini Beach park to put up our tent?
3.) Are the spots for tents marked or can it be put up anywhere?
Thanks for your help!

We are planning a wedding on the North Shore in March of 2010 (staying in one of the houses) and we are considering Anini. What do we need to know in terms of surf, weather, etc. I am prepared for rain, but would love to get some swimming, hiking and beach time in. This is a great forum and you know I will be hitting the fish taco stand! Thanks in advance!

Just spent many days snorkeling at Anini. It happens to be one of my favorite spots. the last day we were there we were about to go in the water and there was a shark/sharks in the water.
It was smimming hear the shallow water's edge. About 5 feet and was grey and had black on the dorsel (sp) and tail. What could this have been?
I chose to not go in, should I have notified anyone?
This shark hung around for a good 2 hours

Sounds like a little black tip - if you're sure it was a shark. Rays look a lot like sharks from shore.

It's a shark I have great photo's of it.. 5 feet long and it had it's tail and fin and dorsel (sp) out so I am sure it was a shark

We are coming to Kauai at the end of May and will be there over Memorial Day weekend.
We can not decide between staying at the end of the road on Anini, and staying off of Alamoo Rd in Haena.
We are a family of 5 with 3 young adult children - a very special family vacation. I have a chronic illness... so we want both options of beach/snorkeling/swimming in front of us as well as outings.
Last year I snorkled at Tunnels and Beach House (south) Amazing! Want similar experience.
Is Kepuhi beach swimable?
Which place would you suggest we locate ourselves?
What do you think Memorial Day weekend will be like?
Mahalo for this site and your help.

Hi Melanie - you should stay in Haena in May. It's a very nice time of year. Watch out at Kepuhi (very dangerous currents).

Just be careful about the Portuguese man-of-war. I got stung and it really hurts a lot at the beginning. Some articles say that it can be deadly if you are allergic.

This is a really nice site. thanks for the friendly info. i have talked my family of 10 into camping with me on anini beach because i fell in love with it last year. this is the thing, we're coming over spring break. can you tell me what to expect for crowds? is it going to be crazy and loud? think my 70 yr old parents are game, and i don't want them to be miserable. we are all sturdy campers, just wondering about the scene.
THANKS!

We are a family of 4 with two small children thinking of renting a house at the end of the dirt road. i read an earlier post that said it can be loud due to traffic turning around. would this be a good location for us? what is the beach like at the end of anini road?
thanks in advance

Karl - those houses at the end of Anini are pretty cool. I don't think noise is a huge issue.

thanks - we are looking forward to it!

Will be in Kauai first week in May; staying in Poi\'pu. Please advise best snorkeling sites for someone with some experience, but not a lot. When I sort for best snorkeling, Anini comes up, but comments say it isn\'t that great for snorkeling, so I am confused. Thanks so much.

I know you don't "review" accommodations here, but maybe someone else who's reading this can help me out. wondering about the tiny beachhouse WAHI MANA on anini; is anyone familiar with it? is it charming- or a dive? it's the really small little brown cottage on the side closer to the park, i think. anyone have anything to say about it?
